In Issue #3 of Modern Knives, Dale Seago of the San Francisco Bujinkan joins us as our special guest in a segment on defeating the surprise knife attack. Drawing from the historical Japanese battlefield arts practiced in the Bujinkan, Dale explores the concept of controlling the space between the attacker and defender through a number of sword, knife, and empty hand applications using this principle.
James Keating joins us in an insightful segment on the design concepts behind his signature Chinook folding knife, produced in association with Spyderco. Jim shows how the Chinook’s configuration, combined with Bowie knife style backcuts, make this knife come alive. These skills will transfer to other knives as well, but especially if you have a Chinook you’ll want to see this segment.
Pete Kautz covers a series of extensions and variations on the drills presented on the popular Comtech Drawpoint Volume One that Mr. Keating produced in 1993 (also known as "Reverse Grip Knife Fighting", the title Paladin Press later gave it). Covered are such variations as drawing the knife from concealment, double knife, forward grip, left side versus right side, low kicks and more.
Our video reviews this time start with Jeet Kune Do stylist Demi Barbito’s Fight Fire With Fire DVD, which covers the tactical use of pepper spray. While many people carry pepper spray, very little has been taught on the subject. Demi presents top-notch instruction with simple, effective information that can be easily incorporated with any martial arts curriculum.
Musical guest Divinity Destroyed joins us this time with three tracks off of their 2002 CD, Eden in Ashes. We hear excerpts from their songs Aurora, Nothing but a Shadow, and Sweet Heresy. Visit them at www.divinitydestroyed.com for more music, information, and to get CDs of this hot progressive metal band!
