Issue #1 starts with James Keating's segment on the correct use of the Spanish Notch and Blade Catchers. Though long misunderstood, the notch and blade catchers are fully functional parts of a true fighting knife and not mere ornamentation as some would have you believe. You will see the exact drills used at Comtech to develop this skill in real time with the knife that Jim designed specifically for this kind of work...the Crossada. If you have a Bagwell / Ontario Hells Belle or other knife with a trapping guard on it, then you will want to see this segment for sure.
Next, James Loriega gives us an introduction to the Navaja, or large Spanish folding knife. He shows the different styles of navajas and then gets into how to open and close the knife, grips, guards, and a number of basic techniques used in handling the knife. This is the first time that James Loriega has ever appeared on video, anywhere, and we are extremely pleased to have him joining us for the first issue of Modern Knives.
Pete Kautz then explores the Espada Y Daga, or Sword & Dagger of Arnis. Professor Presas called this the "Spanish Technique", and here it is presented in the classical Cinco-Teros (5 Strikes) style. Solo attack set, solo defense set, partner attack and defense flow, connections with the striking styles, and more shown.
Finally, we have a look at Ramon Martinez's two-tape set on Spanish Rapier entitled La Verdadera Destreza - True Art Of Spanish Swordsmanship. We have a look at some of the structured drills and advanced combinations taught in this art, all of which are very clearly broken down step-by-step for the student on this video series. The advanced student will notice connecting lines between what they are seeing here and what they have seen earlier in the issue.
Our musical guest for this issue is Seasons of the Wolf. These guys have what I would call a "classic metal sound" and have appeared on a number of soundtracks for horror movies in recent years. Check out their web page for more music and details!
