Modern Knives Issue #11 -
Savate, Sungkiti & The C.A.T.
Jim Keating starts off MK#11 teaching us about the hidden or reverse thrusting lines of the Sungkiti (weaving thrust). This concept is explored through a number of striking, disarming and low line takedown / finish applications of the blade. Plus how to develop dynamic mobility while in the low crouched position both with a partner and solo!
Then Pete Kautz covers all you'll need to know to build and practice with his unique Circular Attack Training Dummy or "The C.A.T." as it is known. This special device can easily be built at home with no power tools for well under $30 and it allows you to practice intercepting with kicks and punches, the straight blast, headbutts, knees and elbows, clinching, stick, knife, pistol and more along with constant forward pressure in a way you've never trained solo before. If you don't have a live human being to practice with, the C.A.T. is your next best bet!
Craig Gemeiner then takes the stage with an excellent inside look at the old-time Savate Defense Dans La Rue "Defense In The Streets". He covers proper stance and movement, bare-knuckle power punching, power kicking, and combination drills! Some hot skills and concepts you can incorporate right away no matter what style you train.
Musical Guest Nikolai Ruskin shares a piece of original music called "Road Hog" that he wrote just for us at MK when I asked for something heavy! Nikolai is a multi instrumentalist known for his skill on a variety of instruments from around the Middle East. His influences range from Egyptian folk music to sweeping cinematic scores to Japanese Taiko drums, Gypsy violins and grinding heavy metal riffs (such as this piece).
