Sharkee Training Knives
We like 'em, we use 'em!
By Pete Kautz, Director Alliance Martial Arts LLC
Sharkee training knives have been around for a few
years now, and have quickly become a favorite in the martial arts and
defensive knife training world. I feel that they fill a important gap
between the wood and metal training knives we also use, and I am so
impressed with the product that the Sharkee knife has become the
standard training blade for all new students here at Alliance. They
have several advantages for the new student of the fighting arts, as
I will explain here.
First off, the Sharkee knives are made from a slightly flexible yet
incredibly strong injection-molded plastic. Unlike wood or metal,
there is no chance of the blade getting nicks or splinters from
contact which can be dangerous to other students. Imagine having a
big splinter rammed into your arm by a damaged wooden knife - not
fun, and I have seen it happen!
Being injection molded plastic, the Sharkee blades
are practically indestructible and you will not have to worry about
abusing them in training. They can take whatever you dish out. Unless
you lose it, this will be the last training knife you will ever need
to buy. (Of course, like most of us, you probably ENJOY having a
variety of training blades available, so it won't stop you
there!)
The Sharkee knives are 11" long, and have 1/2" thick blades with very
rounded edges. There are no sharp corners to be found anywhere on
these knives! This mean extra safety for you and your partner when
doing high-speed drills where you make contact, like in Cover
& Slash where the arms are targeted for slashing attacks. At
only 4 ounces in weight, they are very light and don't end up acting
like little clubs on the bones of your arms the way a heavy wood or
metal trainer can.
Practicing knife disarms with the Sharkee knives
is more realistic than practicing with the commonly used wooden dowel
or other round training weapon since the Sharkee knives have definite
edges to them. This is important, since when performing a disarm it
is vitally important that you apply pressure to the weapon's flat and
not the weapon's edge. Since the Sharkee knife is plastic, you also
won't have to worry about breaking mirrors or windows when doing
strip-and-send style disarms that cause the knife to rocket out of
the attackers hand.
Finally, these training knives are very economical compared to wood
or metal. The standard "wooden tanto" used in most dojos (and hardly
better than a wooden dowel) costs almost as much as one of these, and
comparable sized metal training knives cost easily 3-5 times more. I
think the Sharkee knives have one of the best bang-for-the-buck
ratios in this department.
Bottom line? We use them here at Alliance. They are a required item
for training. What more can I say?
