Questions About American Instinctive Rifle
Shooting These are all questions I have been asked by e-mail over the years about our American Instinctive Rifle Shooting Program, collected here as a FAQ. ************** Question: Do you have to already be an experienced shooter to benefit from your program? Answer: The American Instinctive Rifle Shooting program is for all levels. Beginners can learn just as fast as experienced shooters, sometimes faster because they have no preconceptions or habits. ************** Question: Do you need to be young and have good eyes to do this? Also, I was told I'm cross-eye dominant, does that make a difference? Answer: If you can pick up a rifle, you're young enough to do this. At age 77 my mom (who is cross eye dominant by the way) learned how in a single afternoon! Read about it here. ************** Question: Is American Instinctive Rifle Shooting basically just pointing with your index finger and pulling the trigger with your middle finger? What I mean is do I have to pull the trigger with my middle finger or can I pull it with my index finger, like normal? Answer: In American Instinctive Rifle Shooting it is the index finger that always works the trigger, just like normal. We do not teach any use of the middle finger for trigger control. ************** Question: Can the techniques be used for other types of guns? Answer: Yes, they can be used with any long gun, shotgun, carbine, etc. There is also a way of doing this work with pistols, though that is not covered on the DVD. ************** Question: How accurate can these techniques make me? Answer: They can make you deadly accurate if you practice them - I regularly shoot pennies and aspirin out of the air. ************** Question: Where can I practice with it? Answer: Since you're using a low power air rifle at first, you can practice nearly anywhere you have some room to shoot, like a backyard, field, etc. Ground targets can even be done indoors in a garage or basement. ************** Question: Is this just for beginners who can't hold a gun right, because I'm not a beginner, I'm actually a novice marksman. Answer: No, it's not just for beginners, it's for anyone who wants to learn to shoot without using the sights. ************** Question: Can the technique be used while using your sights? Answer: If you're using the sights, you don't need to use this method. Instinctive shooting is for when you do not have time to get a sight picture or are unable to due to low light conditions, a rapidly moving target, etc. It is the flip-side of the coin with sighted fire. The good shooter knows both and when to apply them. ************** Question: Can the principles of the shooting technique be used to improve the accuracy of my normal sighted shooting? Answer: YES, the basic principles that make this work will all help your regular sighted shooting by promoting good alignments of the weapon and confidence in your ability to hit small distant targets. Typically our shooters report that they feel like they are "cheating" because it seems easy when they are allowed to take their time and use the rifle's sights against stationary targets. ************** Question: I am using a Daisy Red Ryder. Do you really think that they shoot consistently enough for shooting small aerial targets? Answer: YES, that's exactly what I use and teach students with! While not perfect, until you start to shoot at targets the size of a penny or smaller the Red Ryder is certainly "good enough". All my very best to you, Pete Kautz |
