The COMTECH Controlling Option Howdy all, this week I want to share some exciting news on the DVD front! Many of you missed out on Mr. Keating's excellent two-volume set "The Controlling Option" some years back when it was released because it was only available from him and never widely advertised. So, for the most part this series "flew under the radar" but those who did see it (or who learned the skills in person) were blown away with the material. The subtitle of the series is "advanced body levers and foot immobilizations" and expresses the essence of the training. At the time it came out it was also referred to as "Comtech Silat" because of the nature of the work and the fact that Mr. Keating organized the progression into 8 Jurus or forms. Volume one teaches Jurus 1 to 4 which all deal with controlling the opponent off of single attacks and volume two then continues on with Jurus 5 to 8 that all deal with double attacks. Each of these sets must be learned on both sides for a total of 16 so you can move freely both left and right. Throughout the series there are numerous support exercises shown which help to develop sensitivity, flow, and the ability to grip correctly using the thumb and not the little fingers. This last point is difficult to explain in words but easily understood by watching and then (most importantly) doing with a friend. Some of the exercises I can pretty much guarantee you've never seen before - I never had anyhow! But maybe I'm on the "slow boat"... Once learned the eight Jurus can all be played back and forth in a free flow with a training partner where you will counter and re-counter each other while taking each other's balance. This is a lot of fun and blends effortlessly into your other trapping drills such as Hubud / Sagang Labo as well as all your other siriking, throwing, locking, etc... (And if you are used to doing the Hubud / Sagang labo version with the *palm-up grip on beat three* rather than the slap down version? The Jurus will all click for you right away and open up a whole new series of possibilities to add to your Kali!!!) All the very best, Pete Kautz PS - Like this Article?
