Filipino
Martial Arts
Warrior Arts of the
Archipelago
I have been practicing the
Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) since the mid 80's, and in 1991 was
awarded the rank of Black Belt (Lakan) in the art of Arnis by
Professor Remy Presas, Grandmaster of Modern Arnis. Since then,
I have worked with many other instructors to learn their specific
skills and insights into the FMA, but I have always been glad to have
learned the Presas Arnis as a base to work from.
Though many FMA "Concepts"
people I've met turn up their nose at Professor's Modern Arnis, they
can not deny that it has helped produce guys like W. Hock Hochheim
and Kelly Worden; bad dudes in anyone's book. Between Remy and
Ernesto, they have influenced more people around the world with their
travels and teachings of Arnis than perhaps anyone in the FMA
community, and for this alone should be held in high
regard.
Perhaps some of the folks that
trained only once or twice with the Professor and are quick to show
you a certificate are no good (just like anyone who does the
"seminar thing" just to get a diploma for the wall so they may now
clam to "teach" a style), but the Professor himself or his longtime
Black Belts? That is another story!
He and his Art are real;
if you have ever worked with him one-on-one then you know this
already! Many instructors around the world teach the Presas
Arnis and many more have used it base to work from. After a
lifetime of dedication to the FMA, I feel it is a shame that they
often get ignored.
