Unarmed and Dangerous

James Keating

Unarmed and Dangerous is the title of a dynamic 2 tape set from Master at Arms James Keating in association with Paladin Press.  Moving away from the blade work central to most of Mr. Keating's tapes, here disarming concepts are examined for a number of modern weapons, from sticks and baseball bats to knives, handguns, and shotguns.  Crime statistics show that criminals choose to use weapons to both intimidate and injure their victims, and a modern stylist would be foolish to ignore this fact.

The first tape covers disarming short weapons, such as handguns, knives, and sticks.   It starts, as do many Paladin Press tapes, with some "real life" combat scenarios using the weapon disarms.  They look like they had fun filming these, but more importantly you see just how suddenly a situation could be turned around using these very techniques.

Then it is off to the studio, where Master at Arms Keating demonstrates several methods for putting a handgun "out of battery" (making it unable to fire, in layman's terms).  Following this we learn the two primary methods of disarming which will be done with a number of minor variations throughout the tapes.  These are mechanically simple methods which utilize the power of the whole body in effecting the disarm or weapon reversal and are very reliable.  One of the beauties of these tapes is that time and again, from any angle or weapon situation, you are shown how to effect these same disarms.  The application of these disarms then, to knives, sticks, and handguns fills the rest of the tape.  Also highlighting tape one is a section shot at the range, where we see live fire demonstrations with both an automatic pistol and a revolver of how easily they can be put out of action if you know what you are doing.

Tape two, which covers disarming long guns and baseball bats, gets right into the action.  After a very quick review of the disarming concepts, we are shown how the basic movements we learned on volume one can apply against the longer two-handed weapons.  By sticking with the established core techniques and then working through a variety of variations, a wide array of specific applications are shown.  Again, disarming is shown against attacks from multiple angles, with a variety of throwing, locking, and striking follow ups, as well as possible use of the captured firearm.  Again and again you see how the power of the basics can apply to any situation, giving you confidence to act and the skills to insure success.
